1 February 2003 | Happy New Year! Welcome to 2003!
January promises to be surprisingly steamy, with operations planned on the Western Maryland and the Durbin & Gree-- what? It's February? Already? It can't be!
Well, even if it is, there's interesting news to be had, if I can ever find the time to collate it. For those of you who have written but gotten no reply, I am working through the email backlog, though it may take a while. Thanks for your patienct.
In the meantime, Jim Wrinn has put together his best educated guess on what will be steamed up in the USA in 2003 and offered a couple of suggestions and predictions in this edition of the Crystal Ball. Almost 150 locomotives will be active this year - how many will YOU see? |

Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad | (Cumbres & Toltec) The C&TS saga remains in gridlock. In January the Commission which oversees the property for the States of Colorado and New Mexico agreed to negotiate a revised operating agreement with the Friend of the C&TS, but no agreement on the scope or terms have been reached yet. Much work on track and locomotives is needed before the railroad is supposed to open in May. And no effort to promote the railroad is being undertaken by the Commission. Expect another BAD year on the C&TS, if there are operations at all. |

WMS 734 at Brush Tunnel (MPEG, 1.81MB) | (ex-M&KLCo Climax 3) January did see some steam activity in the Appalachians. Western Maryland Scenic operated five photo trains - three sponsored by Carl Franz, two by David Goodheart - and the West Virginia Central's Durbin & Greenbrier Valley put on what looks like a wonderful day in sunny, snowy weather. Check out "Paul's" wonderful photos at left. |
