January 2002 - It's around 5:00pm on 8 October 1956. Pennsylvania Railroad K4s no. 830 sits in the platforms of Exchange Place station on the banks of the Hudson River in Jersey City, NJ at the head of no. 733, the "Broker." Lower Manhattan employees, having ridden the Hudson & Manhattan RR System (H&M) from the Hudson Terminal at 30 Church Street (a low building barely visible over the rear of the second coach) are headed upstairs for a 5:10pm departure and the trip down the New York & Long Branch to Rahway, Asbury Park, or Bay Head. This was part of the now-famous last stand of Pennsy steam.
Within 15 years the Pennsy will be the Penn Central, and will stop serving Exchange Place station when the H&M is taken over by the Port Authority of NY & NJ. Which is where this story gets interesting: PATH acquired the H&M in part for the opportunity to redevelop the Hudson Terminal area.
The replacement for the Hudson Terminal would be known as the World Trade Center.
For the first time since 1908, the commute from Asbury Park to Lower Manhattan doesn't include Exchange Place station - it's been closed since 11 September, when the tunnels flooded from the World Trade Center end. Once again the Woolworth Building, prominent in the photo, is easily visible from Exchange Place. Once again, a ferry from Jersey City is the way to Lower Manhattan.
How quickly it all changed.
